The name Pattachitra has evolved from the Sanskrit words patta, meaning canvas, and chitra, meaning picture. It is manifested by rich colorful application. The Pattachitra however may take a number of forms and range from masks to even toys and models Pattachitra is thus a painting done on Patti, and is manifested by rich colorful application, creative motifs and designs, and portrayal of simple themes such as Dus Avtar, Lord Jagannath and Vesh, Boita Bandan, Navagunjara, Rasa, Lord Ganesh and many others. Pattachitra is considered an important form of Odia painting which originated from the temple of Jagannath at Puri in the 12th century. The origin of the Patachitra paintings can be traced back to the 8th century AD and it is considered as one of the earliest forms of indigenous paintings.. The purpose of the Pattachitra was to popularise the cult of Jagannath to the millions of pilgrims visiting Puri.
